Helen Atherton Govier talks about her brother, Charles Morgan Herbert Atherton, a professional baseball player for the Washington Senators in 1899, and his musical social work with Bohemians and Czechs in New York City, and his travels to Europe with Czechs during World War I where he died; her sister Harriet Cushman Atherton, eldest brother Frank, younger sisters Annie and Mary, and her father George W. Atherton; and a fire on the campus of Penn State.

Charles Atherton was the son of George Atherton, the 7th president of Pennsylvania State College. He graduated from Pennsylvania State College in 1892 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry. He played both football and baseball while in college and traveled with sports teams after graduation. In 1906 he became the organist at the Jan Hus Settlement Church in New York City.
